Therapy Approach

Hey there! I am Sarah Sustaita (she/they), and I work with individuals whose experiences have often been dismissed, misunderstood, or reduced to symptoms. Many of the clients I work with have been in therapy many times but are looking for something beyond symptom management; they want help understanding why their patterns developed, how their experiences shaped their identity and nervous system, and what those experiences came to mean. My approach is rooted in existential, meaning-oriented therapy, but I integrate somatic-based tools and gentle embodiment to help clients understand what their system learned to do to survive, as well as how those adaptations may be updated with intention.

My work is informed by formal clinical training, ongoing supervision, regular case consultation, and lived experience in several of the areas I support. I value clinical training, and I’ve also seen how lived understanding deepens trauma work in ways theory alone can’t, particularly when it comes to complexity and overlap with concerns. I am trained in EMDR and integrate it thoughtfully when clinically appropriate. I have training in IFS-Informed parts work and incorporate Joanne Twombly’s modification to IFS to support complex trauma and dissociation through stabilization, pacing, and attachment.
